Dr. Hana Kim is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders and the director of the Language in Aging and Stroke Rehabilitation (LASER) Lab. She earned her BA and master's degree at Ewha Womans University in South Korea. Following the completion of her degree, she worked in medical centers as an SLP in the Department of Neurology and in the Department of Rehabilitation, primarily with adults with neurogenic communication disorders. She received her PhD at East Carolina University under the guidance of Dr. Heather Harris Wright. Before joining USF, she worked in the Department of Neurology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine as a postdoctoral fellow under Dr. Argye Hilis. Her primary research interest is understanding discourse-level language production and comprehension, as well as their relationships with cognition and social support in adults with acquired neurogenic communication disorders. She has also been devoted to developing a clinician-friendly language measure for individuals with stroke-induced aphasia, and you can see some of her work in AphasiaBank (https://aphasia.talkbank.org/discourse/CoreLexicon/). Another research interest of hers is how language is processed in the brain, neuroscientifically, using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). Outside of her research, she is a big fan of sports, especially hockey. In her free time, she likes traveling and exploring new places.
