Undergraduate

Entrance Requirements

The Biomedical Engineering program is a limited-access program, meaning there are a limited number of spaces available and students must meet specific requirements in order to continue in the major.

Steps to apply to the program

First-Year Students:

1) Apply to USF.

Incoming first-year students  who are interested in the Biomedical Engineering Major program should meet the following criteria to ensure success in this rigorous limited-access program:

  • Minimum SAT Math 640 or ACT Math 27 or CLT 27
  • Minimum High School Weighted GPA of 3.6 (as determined by USF Undergraduate Admissions)
  • Ideally, students will have completed advanced high school courses in Chemistry, Physics, Calculus and Biology.

All students will work toward continuation to the upper-division major, following the requirements listed below.

2) All first-year and continuing students will be required to meet specific continuation requirements in order to be considered for continuation into the upper-division, limited-access BME major courses. Students should work closely with the BME advisor every semester in order to stay on track and work toward meeting these requirements. See the USF undergraduate catalog for details.

Continuing USF Students:

Current USF students should meet the following minimum requirements to be considered for continuation in the program:

  • Completion of the first three semesters of the BME plan of study by the end of the third semester after matriculation to the University with a minimum 3.2 cumulative GPA for those semesters;
  • Minimum cumulative 3.5 GPA for the prerequisite courses, as listed in the table below (best attempt);*
  • Minimum grade of C in each prerequisite course listed in the table;
  • No more than two attempts allowed for the prerequisite courses listed in the table below (withdrawals included);
  • Minimum cumulative 3.2 GPA in all College of Engineering courses by the end of the fourth semester of the BME plan of study;
  • Submit a request-to-continue form at the start of the semester in which all prerequisite courses  will be completed

*Only the best attempt in each prerequisite course as listed below, is considered for admission into the BME program.

Transfer Students:

1) Apply to USF as a transfer student.

2) Once accepted to USF, you may apply to the program.

  • Transfer students must meet the following minimum requirements to be considered for admission into the BME program.
  • Minimum 2.0 cumulative (overall) GPA;
  • Minimum cumulative 3.5 GPA in the prerequisite courses listed below (best attempt*);
  • Minimum grade of C in each prerequisite course listed in the table below;
  • No more than two attempts allowed for the prerequisite courses listed in the table below (withdrawals included);
  • Minimum cumulative 3.2 GPA in all Engineering courses
  • Completed BME request-to-continue form.

*Only the best attempt in each prerequisite course as listed below, is considered for admission into the BME program.

Applicants who do not meet the minimum admission requirements as stated above will not be eligible for admission into the BME program.

Transfer applications are referred to the department only after the USF Office of Admissions (including official transcripts) considers them complete. Applications are reviewed periodically and not on a rolling basis. The date of review may vary depending on the number of applications received.

Transfer applicants coming from out-of-state or private Florida institutions will be considered on a space available basis only.
