PCGS Alumni Network Members Volunteer for Day of Service
January 25, 2018
By: Emily Munger
The newly formed PCGS Alumni Network organized day of volunteer service on January 13, where they put to use what they had learned during their time at PCGS to help their community. On the First Annual PCGS Alumni Network Day of Service, network members collaborated with more than 20 individuals from Temple Terrace Farm2School and USF students at Turner Bartels K-8 School in New Tampa. PCGS alumni worked alongside current USF students to renovate garden beds, plant seedlings, and maintain, prepare and mulch vegetable gardens at the school. These gardens are to be integrated into the curriculum of Turner Bartels STEM program. Arnel Garcesa, PCGS Alumni Network Board Member and one of the organizers of the event, said, "We laid the foundation for students at TB8's STEM program to learn about sustainable agriculture practices and to practice it with a new hands-on opportunity."
This annual day of service gives students the chance to apply environmental techniques
while also learning about what a degree from the Patel College of Global Sustainability
can offer them. Through this day of service, impacts will be made on students and
community members in the Tampa Bay area, deepening the college's ties to local organizations
with sustainable practices and goals. It also affords PCGS students and alumni the
opportunity to spread environmental awareness, and apply the skills and lessons they've
learned at the college. If you are interested in joining the PCGS Alumni Network,
please email pcgsnetwork@gmail.com for more information. All PCGS alumni (even those not living in the Tampa area) are
eligible and encouraged to join!
