The Patel College of Global Sustainability (PCGS) is the newest degree-granting college at the University of South Florida and is unique in its mission and its approach. Endowed through a generous gift from Drs. Kiran and Pallavi Patel, the College was established in 2009 to foster sustainable urban development and help society live in harmony with the environment. It accomplishes this by nurturing collaborative research and education across disciplines and supporting meaningful engagement with communities locally and globally.
The College employs an elite core faculty and staff, with its real strength being its ability to serve as the hub for a network of scholars and professional experts interested in working together to generate new knowledge and prepare a new generation of sustainability professionals. These professionals will provide their expertise to assist communities, companies, and governments maximize their productivity, reduce their ecological and carbon footprint, practice social responsibility and enhance resilience.
A Master of Arts degree and a Master of Science degree in Global Sustainability is currently available in nine concentrations, engaging faculty from across the University to work with students in such important foci as food security, water, energy, climate change, entrepreneurship, sustainable business, sustainable tourism, sustainability policy, and transportation. Moreover, eight graduate certificates in similar topical areas allow professionals to enhance their disciplinary careers with a global sustainability emphasis. All students are required to engage in a sustainability capstone or internship project to acquire hands-on experience in the real world. Fostering interdisciplinary research in such areas as renewable fuels, urban metabolism, integrated water systems modeling, and urban infrastructure systems, the College supports innovative ideas and just recently issued its own call for proposals which generated triple the interest expected
