A nose for COVID-19: USF researchers develop rapid test technology with virus-sniffing biosensor
Dr. Salvatore D. Morgera, Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of South Florida, currently leads a team of researchers working to develop an "electronic nose" capable of smelling biochemicals present in the novel coronavirus. The USF lab-developed device, dubbed "Bull Nose" was recently selected from a field of over 4,000 competitors as a semi-finalist in the XPRIZE Rapid COVID Testing competition (83 Degrees).

A new study provides substantial evidence that the first fossil feather ever to be discovered does belong to the iconic Archaeopteryx, a bird-like dinosaur named in Germany on this day in 1861. This debunks a recent theory that the fossil feather originated from a different species (USF Newsroom).

Hurricane evacuation plans could be muddled by coronavirus, study says
Researchers from USF are studying how hurricane evacuations may be impacted by the coronavirus pandemic this year. Jennifer Collins, a professor of geosciences at USF, and Elizabeth Dunn, instructor in the USF College of Public Health, received a National Science Foundation Rapid Response grant to work with National Weather Service, Louisiana Public Health Institute and other meteorologists and emergency planners on the study (Tampa Bay Times / paywall).

The Rare and Atypical Diabetes Network, or RADIANT, plans to screen about 2,000 people with unknown or atypical forms of diabetes that do not fit the common features of type 1 and type 2 diabetes (NIH).
