Mya Breitbart, a biological oceanography professor at the USF College of Marine Science (CMS), published a landmark paper in the Proceedings of the National Academies of Sciences (PNAS) about a new sequencing technique called viral metagenomics. The method eventually formed the backbone of Breitbart’s impressive research portfolio, and it’s a big part of the reason she has earned so many accolades, most recently, Distinguished University Professor (DUP) at USF.

USF expands Alzheimer's research to Sarasota, seeks participants
The university's Preventing Alzheimer's with Cognitive Training (PACT) study, funded by the National Institute on Aging, uses digital brain training exercises to see if they can reduce the risk of cognitive impairment and dementia such as Alzheimer’s disease. The study is seeking more than 1,200 participants in the Sarasota area to join.

Researchers at the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine, located at the University of South Florida, successfully tested a protein that has the potential to aid in the development of a protein-based therapy for patients with ALS, a progressive nervous system disease, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.

The 6th Air Refueling Wing (ARW) and U.S. Central Command at MacDill have a new educational partnership agreement with USF. The partnership with USF gives MacDill airmen access to world-class resources from USF, such as Ph.D. level expertise to help further educational opportunities, to discuss, brainstorm and problem solve.
