Capitalization Schemes
For each order of heading, there are different possible capitalization schemes. As long as you are consistent throughout the manuscript, you may use any of these. Note, though, that there is a hierarchy.
ALL CAPS
All letters are capitalized.
- Example: ALL CAPS IS OFTEN USED FOR LEVEL 1 HEADINGS LIKE CHAPTER TITLES
Title Case
Capitalize the first and last word of the title and all major words (use lowercase
for articles, prepositions, and conjunctions).
- Example: Title Case is Often Used for Centered or Left-Aligned Level 2 Headings
Sentence case
Capitalize only the first word and any proper nouns.
- Example: Sentence case is sometimes seen in level 3 or level 4 headings
