Bull Ring Accelerator Grant Opportunity

The Foundation Bull Ring Accelerator Grant program (BRAG) is a joint initiative of the USF Foundation and the USF Research Foundation. The Foundation BRAG is designed to support early-stage Tampa Bay Technology Incubator (TBTI) affiliated start-up companies that were formed on the basis of licensed University of South Florida technologies. BRAG provides up to $25,000 of grant funding to support the entrepreneurial ecosystem at USF and help bridge the "valley" or "ditch" of death experienced by early stage technology companies.

Building Entrepreneurship around Tampa Bay 2023

Building Entrepreneurship Around Tampa Bay is an annual event that celebrates the Tampa Bay area's entrepreneurial ecosystem through a showcase of innovative start-ups, dynamic speakers, and opportunities to engage with local resources available to our entrepreneurs. This year, USF CONNECT in partnership with the National Association of Community College Entrepreneurs (NACCE), will host an interactive half-day experience at USF CONNECT's home base at USF Research Park. In addition, this year's Building Entrepreneurship Around Tampa Bay will showcase USF CONNECT's Evolve Accelerator launched in mid-2023 to promote the growth and business development of women, minority, and veteran entrepreneurs. Join us in Discovery Hall, where expert panelists from valuable entrepreneurial support organizations will discuss the importance of available resources and their impact on our local innovators and entrepreneurs. National Science Foundation (NSF) SBIR/STTR Cohort

If you're working towards an NSF SBIR proposal, the Florida High Tech Corridor can help! Their proposal support cohort will run from April 18 - June 30, 2023. You must have an accepted NSF Project Pitch by April 18th to participate.

Participating companies will receive targeted guidance and one-on-one application reviews. The cohort is timed so companies will be ready to submit a proposal by the NSF's 6/30/2023 deadline.

Learn more about the Florida High Tech Corridor at USF

Round 2 of The Corridor Early-Stage Innovation Fund is now accepting Letters of Intent. This program supports early-stage innovations and applied research with significant commercial potential. These funds are meant to seed faculty-developed technologies that could lead to industry investment, start-up creation, and/or licensing opportunities. USF researcher teams may request up to $25,000 to support USF research expenses associated with the further development of the target innovation. Initial funding has been provided to support two pilot rounds of this program with three awards anticipated in each round for a total of six awards.

About the Florida High Tech Corridor – An economic development initiative of three research universities — the University of Central Florida, the University of South Florida and the University of Florida — the Florida High Tech Corridor converges and catalyzes the capacity of high tech, innovation and bright minds across a 23-county region to generate a global ripple effect that advances the lives of people in the communities it serves.

NASA is piloting a program to help innovators in academia and at other research non-profits learn how to transition their technology to market by providing access to the NSF I-Corps program. The NASA I-Corps™ Pilot aims to accelerate the transition of promising ideas from the lab to the marketplace while encouraging collaboration between academia and industry. The NASA I-Corps™ Pilot will support teams with access to training in innovation and entrepreneurship skills through a grant, up to $10K, and the opportunity to apply for additional funding, up to $40K.

Proposals may be submitted at any time through March 29, 2023, but applications will be reviewed in intervals on the following dates: July 22, 2022; Sept. 16, 2022; Nov. 17, 2022; and Jan. 20, 2023.

The Informational Webinar will: (1) provide an overview of the NASA I-Corps Pilot, (2) describe the proposal process and requirements, and (3) allow for webinar attendees to submit questions. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions to the NASA I-Corps Pilot Point of Contact and the National Science Foundation's I-Corps Program Director, Dr. Ruth Shuman.

Predictability in Medical Device Innovation for Startups

In this presentation, Hilda Scharen will provide background information about the FDA's regulation of medical devices, share insight on the latest FDA program designed to support medical device innovation for start-ups, and share examples of qualified tools. Assessment methods are not only costly but take time to develop for start-ups and innovators. There can be uncertainty whether those methods will be accepted by FDA when incorporated in medical devices. This presentation focuses on a pathway for new and emerging technologies that can provide assurance for investors that these innovative methods are viable. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration Medical Device Development Tools (MDDT) program aims to streamline the approval process for devices with emerging tech via a library of regulatory science tools that have been scientifically validated and qualified.

2022 Tampa Inventivity Tour and Cade Prize for Innovation Kick Off

Since 2010, the Cade Prize has celebrated innovation by identifying, recognizing, and celebrating Florida-based inventors and entrepreneurs, who, through an innovative invention, demonstrate a creative approach to addressing problems in their field of expertise. As one of the largest cash prize competitions for innovation in Florida, the Cade Prize has drawn hundreds of creative thinkers from diverse sectors, from Pensacola to Miami, who enter cutting-edge inventions with real market potential. The Cade Prize has awarded $50,000 in past years. In 2021, thanks to a generous pledge by Scott R. MacKenzie, the Cade Prize awarded $64,000: $34,000 for first place, $13,000 for second place, $8,000 for third place, $5,000 for fourth place, $3,000 for fifth place and $1,000 for the People’s Choice.

The Female Founders Startup Bootcamp is a 5-week virtual program open to all women and those who identify as female who are considering a startup. Teams will gain access to invaluable approaches, resources, advice and the opportunity to grow their network with like-minded women leaders and inventors.

This program is open to female entrepreneurs or female-led entrepreneurial teams from across the South. Participants in this program are coached by VentureLab’s female startup instructors in the techniques behind The Lean Startup methodology and will be expected to conduct customer discovery interviews to evaluate your market potential. Innovation Corps @ Department of Defense Program Opportunity

The Department of Defense (DoD) is soliciting applications from current/recent DoD awardees on research topics to receive mentoring and funding to accelerate the transition and commercialization of the funded research. Bull Ring Accelerator Grant Opportunity

The Foundation Bull Ring Accelerator Grant program (BRAG) is a joint initiative of the USF Foundation and the USF Research Foundation. The Foundation BRAG is designed to support early stage Tampa Bay Technology Incubator (TBTI) affiliated start-up companies that were formed on the basis of licensed University of South Florida technologies. BRAG provides up to $25,000 of grant funding to support the entrepreneurial ecosystem at USF and help bridge the "valley" or "ditch" of death experienced by early stage technology companies.

Are you a biomedical scientist who believes that he/she has a research idea for a biotech start-up?

In addition to seeking fundamental knowledge, NIH’s mission also includes applying that knowledge from research to enhance health, lengthen life, and reduce illness and disability. To help accomplish this mission, National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) recently re-issued the "$100,000 for Start a SUD Startup" Challenge.

The goal of this Challenge is to enable scientists to test the hypothesis that their research idea or fundamental research can be transformed into a biotech startup. Each Challenge winner will receive $10,000 to empower their research-based ideas and develop a minimal viable proof (MVP) of a product. If customers validate the project idea, winners are encouraged to create or further advance their biotech startup no later than 6 months after the prize is awarded. Post Challenge, NIDA staff will provide dedicated assistance and guidance about the NIH grant submission process, including submissions for the SBIR/STTR grants.
