Importing/Exporting, Relocating, or Reassigning Animals
The transportation of animals, including inter-institutional importation/exportation, or intra-institutional relocation to other facilities or IACUC approved laboratories, should occur only when essential since any transit time introduces risks of exposure to environmental extremes, crowding, infectious agents, and possible zoonoses, which can affect animal and public welfare, and the consistency of results. Movement of animals within animal housing rooms is discouraged.
Importing/Exporting Animals
The shipment of animals to, or from other Institutions must be requested in writing using one of the forms linked below, and approved by Comparative Medicine.

Intramural Relocation or Reassignment of Animals
Relocation: The movement of animals from one animal housing room to another in a single facility, or between separate Comparative Medicine managed facilities requires approval of a Request to Relocate and/or Reassign Research Animals form.
Reassignment: Animals are eligible for transfer from one IACUC-approved research use to another if they are naïve with respect to major medical, surgical, research or teaching uses. Transfer of unused animals from one IACUC-approved research use to another is permitted only when justified in writing and approved by both the originating and reassigned Principal Investigators on a Request to Relocate and/or Reassign Research Animals form. An approved reassignment of animals from one IACUC approved research protocol to a new IACUC approved protocol becomes effective on the date of the transfer, and all animal per diems, identifying cards, and inventories are changed to reflect this reassignment.
