Keep your passport valid for at least six months into the future. Do not let your passport expire. You must have a valid passport at all times. If your passport will expire while you are in the United States, you need to contact your embassy to find out how to renew it. Once you have your updated passport, you must provide OIS with a copy of the page showing your new passport expiration date by uploading a copy of the BIO page in iStart. 

Your visa must be valid at the time you enter the US. However, if it expires while you are here you may remain in the US with an expired visa, as long as you are maintaining your status with a valid passport and a valid I-20.
